The Lolita Ensemble was was founded in 1987 in Ljubljana by three musicians: saxophonist Primož Simončič, drummer Blaž Grm and bassist Iztok Vidmar. Guitar player Samo Ljubešić joined the group after a year, and later, Mirsad Šabić took over a drummer position. Lolita participated in the Vso srečo ti želim [I Wish You All the Luck] dance spectacle, in the production of the Cankarjev Dom in Ljubljana, and the play was also performed at the Dance Theater Festival in Budapest in 1991. The music of this play was released on the album Pik Pok. Before the breakup of Yugoslavia, the band had played throughout the country, as well as at concerts in Italy, Hungary, Austria and the Netherlands. In 1996, the CD Lolipop was released in cooperation with the France Prešern Cultural Artistic Society. A friendship with Z. Sokolović emerged from a collaboration on the video for the song Modri voz [A Livid Train], to staging together a “humoresque for for jazz quartet and actor” entitled The Bear, based on A. P. Chekhov and Z. Sokolović. After more than 30 performances, it is still being performed throughout Slovenia and Croatia. In that play, violinist Jelena Ždrale has joined the band and Mirsad was replaced by Marjan Stanić who gave the band a new ethno-balkan style.
