The Sirocco Ensemble is one of the most exciting contemporary Swedish groups promoting world music, and whose performances and interpretations have been frequently described as dramatic, emotional, and life-affirming. Their music stems from the broad range of Jewish music traditions, with songs in Jewish languages and dialects, including Jewish-German Yiddish, Judeo-Spanish Ladino, Hebrew, and Judeo-Arabic. Through arrangements of ancient songs, the ensemble establishes a cultural connection with the music of other traditions, primarily flamenco and South American folk music. Many of the Jewish songs they play have been written in diaspora as a result of encounters with new lands and new cultures, some of the songs written over a thousand years ago in Andalusia in Arabic, and some in Yiddish in the USA in the late 20th century. Through their interpretations, the members of the ensemble – vocalist Sofia Berg-Böhm, guitarist and oud player Patrik Bonnet Jaramillo, cellist Hanna Stenlund Montan, and percussionist Fredrick Gille create links between past and present, between different places and different cultures. They released their debut album titled Amirim in 2014, in cooperation with Grammy nominee Yair Dalal, an effort the Swedish Göteborgs-Posten daily ranked as one of the best recordings of the past ten years.
